Avoid Like the Plague ! September 6, 2010 hdtravel (USA) Although it looks pretty good, it will not play most disks. You get the horrible "incompatible disk" error.
Avoid this unit at all costs !
Don't buy! Run to another brand - quickly. August 20, 2010 Delaisle
This dvd player worked fine, until the horrid "incompatible disk" error appeared. Didn't matter if the dvd was blu-ray, not blu-ray, brand new out of the package, or from the rental shop. "Incompatible disk" error on everything. Upgrading firmware - twice over a period of months - did nothing to help. Sharp Canada did nothing to help, other than advise me that it was out of the 1 year warranty.
Please do your research online before buying this product. Simply type in 'incompatible disk error' and you will soon see that this is a very common occuring problem. Without a fix.
Will be buying a Panasonic - as two separate audio-visual stores/repair shops have indicated that they rarely see a Panasonic coming in to their service counter.
Find something else August 10, 2010 Len (Adair, OR USA) I bought this along with my Aquos TV as it is upscales video from regular DVDs for the Aquos TVs as well as playing Blu-Ray in 1080p. Well the optics in it suck. It had trouble reading brand new Blue-Ray discs when it was new (read errors not incompatibility) and now can't even read most DVDs. On top of that it takes five minutes for it to start so you don't even know that it is going to fail until your popcorn is stale. I have requested firmware updates from Sharp and they aren't interested in supporting it. Avoid Sharp DVD players!
Don't Buy - No longer supported July 18, 2010 Lloyd B. Stearns Don't buy this product. Tried to play Avatar Blue Ray disk and found out that the unit will no longer play newer Blue-Ray products. When I tried to go to the Sharp website to download the latest firmware, Sharp no longer provides an update (zero updates) to this unit. Since there is no internet connectivity, there is no way for you to get updates as required by the new Blue Ray standard. Don't waste your money, this unit is doomed to the recycle bin. Don't believe me? Look at [...] and put in the Model number (BD-HP20U) and ask for firmware. There is nothing there.
"Incompatible Disc" June 9, 2010 S. Kurth (Madison, WI) We have had our player for 2 years. It came free with a TV we bought. I guess you can say it was worth every penny we paid for it.
We have Netflix... so we do actually use it quite a bit, but just to avoid having to buy another. Most Blu-ray discs we try, we get at least one rejection as "Incompatible Disc" before it accepts it. Often it takes a dozen attempts or so. And on some occasions (like tonight, hence the impetus to write this review) I try for an hour (yes, literally) without it being accepted. Neither firmware updates nor resets or any of the other suggestions I have found have made any difference.
I'm sure not every one has problem to the degree we do, but I certainly recommend staying away from this model.
