Decent player, if you learn its secrets June 6, 2010 Matt Frantz (San Francisco, CA) This is my first Bluray player, and I got it because I have an AQUOS display. I ignored a cryptic error message for several weeks until I realized that I was watching 480p even on Bluray discs.
Secret #1: There is a setup sequence where you have to hold down one of the buttons on the remote for two seconds in order to tell it to display at a high resolution. I did not expect to have to do this when I have an AQUOS display. They should recognize each other, right? The setting appears to be "sticky" as I now enjoy HD resolution without having to perform this unusual setup sequence each time.
Like others on this forum, I had trouble watching Avatar at first. I tried using the USB drives I had lying around to do the upgrade, but it would not mount them, even after reformatting them.
Secret #2: Use the USB drive that comes with the unit to transfer the firmware image. (Thanks to others on this forum for revealing this secret!)
With the new firmware installed last night, Avatar played fine.
I find the unit's responsiveness to be on the slow side for a consumer electronics product. Operating from either the front panel or the remote, I often have to press the open button multiple times when it first powers up. I would expect to be able to press power, then open, but in my experience, you have to wait a good ten seconds before the open button responds.
When loading discs, it often takes a while (tens of seconds) to get past the loading sequence (not counting the annoying trailers and commercials for Bluray technology that it tries to force you to watch). Once loaded, the unit responds reasonably quickly to commands, and I've never had a problem with the popup menu. Pausing during playback is responsive, but expect two seconds or so when resuming.
I did have trouble playing one set of audio CD's, but I don't play a lot of audio CD's, so I don't know how widespread this problem is. Maybe I'll try again now that I've got the latest firmware.
Don't Buy June 4, 2010 David Pettit (CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had the unit for 8 months. I bought a Sharp to sync up well with my Sharp TV which it does. I have allways noticed how slow the player is to respond to commands. It takes a good deal of time to read BlueRays which does before playing. If its paused it takes time to restart. Probably because these are early generation players. DVDs don't have these issues. What is more worrysome is that there are BlueRay Discs it won't play. I've tried two different copies of Avatar and it refuses to play them. When it gets confused it locks up and wont give up the disc. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to have a chance at getting the disc back.
Avatar has problems still on this Blu Ray machine (correctly) April 26, 2010 DC Maxx (Middle Atlantic,East Coast) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sharp hasn't updated this machine since PF9120100 file on the [...] website.
Avatar refuses to load with this software update..the other Blu Ray machines I own the Sony A700 will load & operate it correctly & they haven't been updated since 2009. Sharp Blu Ray says cannot operate ..
Why do I always have to wait for Sharp to update its software? Plus the reading of the disc takes 2 minutes in just the DVD format..
Sharp Updated software files April 26,2010. However some eroors still occur on start up.. Cannot Operate image still flashes and Viewer is asked a question if they wish to Resume Playback (on startup) Kind of quirky... to load a disc & they ask you all these questions...
Wonder if it will do this for all movies in the future? hmmm jury still out
Use the USB drive that came with it for firmware updates!! April 23, 2010 I Love Greek (Houston, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Use the USB drive that came with the machine for firmware updates. I used a different USB drive because it was easier to get to and it repeatedly locked up the machine -- don't know what the problem is. Although I have nothing to compare this machine with, it takes what seems forever to load a disc; my dinner is half eaten before I get a picture. Once loaded, the picture is great. Not a whole lot of frills on this machine, either.
