1 out of 5 stars Half defective   August 27, 2010
doxtorray (Glendale, AZ)
I bought four of these at Christmas time. Three were for gifts and one was for myself. While set-up worked fine initially, the units reported that there were updates available to the software. Naturally, I and the people getting my gifts all decided to do the update. Two of the four units were turned into bricks immediately following the upgrade. Embarrassingly, those were the gift units. The wise thing for me to do would have been to exchange the units for some other brand. I did not. I called Samsung. They politely agreed to exchange the now useless units for replacement (rebuilt) ones.
All went well until another software update notice popped up months later on my unit. Unfortunately, I chose to update the unit (thinking that they must have perfected the process by now, or else that my particular unit was OK with updates. Instead, I now have another brick.
Samsung customer service is good, but I would prefer to have a reliable Blu-ray player.
I also own a model from LG and it has none of these problems, despite having the same features. It was the trouble-free process of upgrading the LG Blu-ray networking player that lulled me into thinking I could update the Samsung when it offered the option.
The reliability of this unit is just not sufficient for it to be recommended to anyone.
In addition, when it was working, it would not correctly play several Blu-ray discs, including some from 20th Century Fox. This is in spite of the fact that the discs work perfectly in my LG player.

I bought this blu-ray so we could have netflix and pandora streaming. I like how it is already set up for that purpose. The picture quality is better that my old dvd player even when watching regular dvds. Be aware you need to buy the link stick to have wireless streaming. Be aware that the others are right- the linkstick then covers up the eject button so you must use remote to put disks in and take out. That's my only complant. Also to get my new wireless router and this machine actually streaming from the internet took me closer to 2 hours than the 20 minutes other people claim.

5 out of 5 stars Have Two of them and Pleased   July 11, 2010

The only word of caution is that I suggest updating the firmware by downloading the file from Samsung's site to a USB stick formatted using fat16 or fat32. Trying to update over the air is risky and can cause the unit to be bricked if there's a glitch during the upgrade process.

1 out of 5 stars WORTHLESS player from TERRIBLE company!   July 9, 2010

How I with I could give this player AND Samsung negative stars! I warn you, NEVER, EVER buy not only this pile of cr*p BD-P1590, but ANYTHING from Samsung. I've had several horrible tech support and customer service experiences from Samsung over the last few years, but this one has pushed me over the edge.

Bought the unit at Xmas last year. Seemed to work ok, we have not used it much. Connected to a Samsung 32" LCD TV. Recently purchased Avatar on Blu-ray, sat down to enjoy it. When we loaded the disk it complained it used the "latest technology" and our player might have a problem, but after chugging a while it finally loaded. We watched for about an hour, then we needed to do some other things, so we stopped the movie and turned off the player. When we tried to watch again, this time after the complaint that the movie might not play, and the system displayed a dire warning about needing a firmware upgrade.

So, I innocently went to the Samsung site, found a new firmware upgrade from May 31, 2010. (BEv2.09_100519_BDP1600_XAA.RUF) Used the USB method to do the upgrade. All seemed to go well, and it chugged through the various steps. But, it never finished, just stayed stuck for three hours on the "do not power off" step 3. Finally I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in, but as expected, it is a brick now. I then looked on line, and see that many, many people have had the same exact problem!

Phone calls and chat with Samsung tech support reminded me how pathetic and unhelpful they are. Essentially, because I am past the 3-month "labor" portion of the warranty, I will need to pay MORE than the purchase price of ~ $120.00 to get this steaming pile of fecal matter fixed. No matter that their firmware upgrade killed it, they could care less - I am SOL.

Tomorrow I will try to sweet-talk Walmart into letting me return it - sometimes they are cool.

I will never, ever, EVER touch another Samsung product. I urge everyone to STAY AWAY - FAR AWAY from Samsung. I've been burned by their phones, their MP3 players, and now this. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me four times - shame on ME."
