5 out of 5 stars Sony Blu-ray Disc Player-BDPS1000ES   August 28, 2010

Love this Blu-ray disc player. My first one. Video quality is superb. I thought the menu selection process was a little cumbersome, more steps to go through (than I'm used to with my standard definition machines) just to play the movie. However, I am very pleased with the video quality. Nothing like I've seen before.

I have the oppo 981HD a universal player to play DVD Audio and SACD. I need a Blue Ray player to demands quality in sound and vision, and this Sony is the best choice for the performance, the built and the the price. ¿Why spend $500 in another universal player like oppo BD83 that no is multiregion and lack Wi-Fi?

5 out of 5 stars The Sony 1000ES won   July 8, 2010

I was looking at the Oppo BD-83 for a while. I waited, because I don't think paying 500.00 for a Blu-Ray player was worth it. I knew the Sony 1000ES was 700.00. So, I still was hesitant. I wanted a player that did what a player is suppose to do, just play discs, with GREAT picture and Audio. Bells and whistles belong on Cell Phones, even though this unit has a few of it's own. Well, my patience was rewarded when I saw the 1000ES for 199.00 including shipping! The Oppo is still 500.00. I don't know what some reviewers are seeing on their screens. Maybe it's the settings, or the TV itself. But, this player has so smooth and deep of a picture on our display, I feel as though I can reach inside the screen and touch the action. It's that real. Yeah, I would never pay 700.00 for a DVD player, or 500.00. But, when Sony dropped the price on this unit to 199.00, with a 5 year warranty, you better go for it!

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect...   June 23, 2010

What was Sony thinking when they priced this player at $700?? Now that you can get it for $200 it's a true contender. Build quality & appearance are excellent in this player, as are the picture & sound quality. It would have been perfect for me except for some minor complaints:
* No Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, etc. This machine does have built-in wi-fi but doesn't have a browser to access these internet-based services. Too bad, too--it was the main reason I bought a 'network' Blu-ray player.
* Very slow to initialize & load.
* Several brief blank spots during movie play. Similar to the brief hiccup you often see when a player switches layers on a long movie but it happens much more often. Irritating. May have been an issue only on my machine.

I boxed mine up & sent it back after a week.
So far I'm very happy with the LG BD570 I replaced it with.
