5 out of 5 stars Excellent Samsung blue ray   July 29, 2010
Bobby
This product from Samsung is amazing. The boot up time take some time and especially if you have anytime active, it keeps searching and alternate between reading disk and not found.
However the product is very very sleek and elegant. Online applications are excellent.

But i was not able to set up the software on my Windows 7 to sync the music and videos from my laptop to TV. Site said that there is no software for Windows 7. I am a little disappointed and will keep looking for updates.

But would definitely recommend this product

4 out of 5 stars Likely as good as any current-generation BDP   July 29, 2010
Britt Mayo (Houston, TX)
The player worked perfectly out of the box, and joined my home wireless network on the first try. It has good wireless sensitivity (signals are weak in this far corner of my house), and plays even HD (720p) YouTube videos crisply (don't have enough signal strength for 1080p, even on my PC). The apps are somewhat handy, albeit rudimentary. I think Samsung has created a platform for future improvement, though, and I give them good marks for that.

In addition to Blu Ray disks, it plays CD's well, and upscales DVD's nicely (viewing on 58" screen). The load time seems fast to me (it's my first BDP, so I have no basis for comparison, but I have never found myself "waiting").

The main thing that would make this INFINITELY more useful is something that I don't expect BDP's to have yet: a good Bluetooth keyboard. Typing in long text is simply too slow and convoluted, making otherwise useful apps such as YouTube and Google Maps much more tedious to use. If it had that, I'd give it 5 stars with no reservation.

4 out of 5 stars Spotty WiFi connection before the following fix   July 28, 2010
R. Fleischmann
I did a lot of research on Blu-Ray players and, for watching Netflix, this one seemed to be the best. The setup was fast and easy straight out of the box, and the aesthetics of the player itself are quite nice, but the player unfortunately had very spotty connection via WiFi, as so many other reviewers have mentioned. I'd try to load a Netflix movie, and it either couldn't connect to the network or it would load and load forever, essentially frozen. The player had to be restarted in these cases, and it almost made me throw the thing out the window.

But, another reviewer here on Amazon posted some instructions for making the player more compatible with a Linksys RG54T router, the same router that I had. I followed the instructions and, knock on wood, the player seems much, much more reliable now. For comparison, it used to flake out four or five times a day. Now, after updating my router's firmware and manually setting my network information (as described below), the player has only had connection problems twice in the last nine days, and both of these occurrences were minor blips.

So, if you're having the same problems that I was having, try updating your router's firmware and manually setting your network on the player itself. Here are the instructions I followed, copied from the previous reviewer:

Update the LINKSYS ROUTER to the current firmware. 8.00.8 is the current firmware version - download it to your desktop from Linksys: WRT54G 8.00.8 Firmware

To perform this, make sure you are using the computer harwired to the router, not a wireless connection.

Log into the router ([...]), then click Administration>>Firmware Upgrade. Select the firmware file to download to your computer and then upload it to the router. This will take a couple of minutes, then, the router will restart. (THERE WASN'T ANY OUTWARD INDICATION OF THE RESTART.)

Now reset the Router - power off the Cable Modem and computer connected to it. Press and hold the Router reset button for 15 seconds, then release and then power off the router.

Power on the modem, wait 60 seconds

Power on the router, wait 60 seconds

Power on the computer

Log into your router ([...]) and click Wireless. Set the Network Name (SSID) to anything you would like at the - Status > Wireless > SSID: NETWORKNAME, just make sure there are no spaces in the network name.

Encryption Key: ENTER YOUR ENCRYPTION KEY (no spaces)

Click Wireless Security, just below Wireless. Change the security mode to WPA2-Personal and TKIP+AES, then, enter a password WPA Shared Key: YOUR ENCRYPTION KEY of at least 8 characters in the pre-shared key/passphrase box. Save the settings.

Use your Blu-Ray remote to find your network, then, enter manual settings. Use the following:
IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

Connect with these settings and enter your WPA2 key when prompted.

Password / Shared Key / Encryption Key: YOUR ENCRYPTION KEY
Wireless SSID Broadcast: ENABLE
WIRELESS CHANNEL: 6 - 2.437 GHZ

5 out of 5 stars Instant Gratification   July 27, 2010
Nhfire77 (New England Area, USA)
From opening the box, performing the firmware update (which was automatic) to wirelessly streaming Netflix, less than 10 minutes.

You need to know nothing else about this player. The quick setup guide that starts up when you first power on the player guides you through all you need.

I love it. I haven't tried any other features, this is all I need.

The only drawback is the remote is sub par in my opinion, but not a detriment to using the unit, I never opened the manual and its been great.

FYI: I have 12MBPS internet service, with WEP2 802.111N wireless router. Slower Internet connection or another security protocol may be an issue, but for me NO Problem!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exceeds Expectations.....so far   July 27, 2010
Superman (Illinois)
I had a Panasonic blue-ray player that performed well but needed a player with more web content and the Samsung BD-C6500 seemed to fit the bill. I picked up this unit on 7/16 and set it up that evening. Set was very quick and easy although linking to my TP-Link wireless router took a little extra effort. When I manually entered router and DNS server information the player couldn't connect to the router. When I selected automatic settings then voila, connection was finally made. Therefore, after entering your security code (if applicable) I recommend letting the player automatically choose the optimal settings for connecting to your router. I have wireless "G".

On day 2 I was having trouble connecting to the web apps. After some teeth knashing and dark thoughts of returning this player I calmed down and realized I accidentally erased my security code when checking the settings. This prevented the player from linking to the router, so I had to re-enter the code. Then I checked my router troubleshooting guide and realized I had it placed next to sources of interference so moved to a better location. After the changes I've been able to connect to the net for 8 straight days with no issues.

Now for the web applications I've tried:

Netflix: First movie I watched was "Breakdown" with Kurt Russell in HD and wow, the picture color and clarity was as good as a blue-ray disc. I'm watching "Prison Break" in HD and it matches the high def quality I get from Comcast. I've watched a few standard def movies and some are DVD quality while others are not quite DVD quality but still very watchable. No buffering, no noise just not quite the color and clarity of DVD but definitely superior to VHS. All in all the picture quality has exceeded my expectations. The only drawback is the sound for streaming movies is usually Dolby Pro Logic and not Dolby Digital but that's minor in my view.

Pandora: Works great and the sound is phenomenal.

Vudu: I will be using my free movie very soon. HD previews I've watched look amazing and HD movies are $1 less than Comcast.

Blockbuster: Haven't used yet.

Picture quality on blue-ray discs is outstanding and the player seems to upscale standard DVD's as well as my panny BD-35 and BD-45. This player is definitely worth the money.
