5 out of 5 stars Everything you can want except 3D   September 8, 2010
Sam I Am (Pittsburgh)
Unless you are interested in 3D capabilities, you'd be foolish to spend more. This is a plug and play blu-ray. If you have an A/V receiver, all you need to do is run a wire from your receiver to the blu ray, set your receiver to blu-ray and turn your tv on. Of course if you own a Sony TV, you don't even have to turn on the TV coz it comes on automatically. So set up is not an issue. Call me crazy but I thought my hdtv reception was improved.

Pop a disk in and it starts fairly quickly. You can even set it to go quicker but that uses more energy. Whether viewing a DVD (which looks better than watching from a DVD player) or a blu-ray disk, you're not going to get a better picture anywhere else. My nephew paid nearly $400 for his blu-ray and I honestly can't tell the difference. Maybe there is a difference in the picture but my eye can't see it.

If you want streaming video from your computer, run a network cable from the BR to the computer and you have a wide range of content available immediately. Me, I'm a movie freak and registered with Netflix. I've seen some complaints in reviews on this concerning streaming video quality. It must be that their internet connection is poor or they don't have enough speed. I have FIOS and the quality of my streaming video is exceptional, no tileing, no freezing, no pixels. Just flawless. Even standard definition streams looks crisp. High definition streaming video comes out high definition. I am totally amazed with today's technology and this blu-ray player nails it!

The only thing I hate about Sony is that they make their remotes so that you can't program them to work with anything but a Sony. I'm now in themarket for a good, reasonably priced, universal remote.

Honestly, why pay more? This absolutely does the trick.

3 out of 5 stars Beware: Sony Lock-in!   September 2, 2010

When you read that this player is "wifi-ready", or (if you read more carefully) that it requires a "USB wifi adapter", don't get any illusions that you'll be able to slap a $20 USB wifi dongle in there and expect it to work. No, no, no, you need to shell out $75-$80 to buy a Sony-branded USB wifi dongle, probably made in the same factory that made your $20 one but bearing the highly-valued Sony brand name; that kicks this player up (unnecessarily, IMHO) into a significantly higher price bracket.

4 out of 5 stars Decent player ... network setup is not for beginners   August 10, 2010
Dave
I had wanted a player that could play Netflix and was very grateful to receive this as a gift. Connecting the player to my entertainment center was straightforward and the picture is good.

The network setup wasn't so straightforward, however. I have quite a bit of computer and networking background, so I figured the network setup would be easy. Not the case! The unit didn't seem to like getting a DHCP address from my D-LINK 655 wireless router - I hard to hard-code the IP address, netmask, gateway, and DNS servers in the setup. While connected behind my firewall, the unit could not perform a network upgrade for the firmware. After some digging I could finally find instructions on how to burn a DVD and upgrade the unit locally (good thing I had a DVD burner - BTW .. you can't use a DVD-RW).

The manual had a paragraph on the network setup and the online FAQs were pretty slim. I emailed support and just received a link to an FAQ article I had already read. I couldn't get the player to connect to the internet until I unplugged my router from my cable modem and plugged the unit directly into the modem. After that, I could plug it back into a switch and configure Netflix. From then on, it's been working great.

If you have a PC with Windows Media Player 11, you can share your own pictures, MP3s and videos. If you have Linux, however, the player seems very picky about the DLNA server you use. I failed to get the unit to see uShare and MediaTomb, but miniDLNA works fine.

Once you get the networking set up, the player links to a fairly large amount of content - NetFlix, Amazon, Pandora, Slacker, YouTube ... Some of the more custom content, however, is somewhat out-of-date.

I've only had the player for a week, so I don't know how durable it is, but now that the networking fiasco is solved, I've been enjoying it.

I bought this SONY unit because it got good reviews on Netflick. I wanted a blue ray player that was wireless and it looked like the perfect player. It was not. First of all the unit is only wireless if you buy a seperate USB device that costs around 70 dollars. The first blue ray DVD I tried in it had trouble loading but once it did played well. I sent it back because of the lack of WIFI and got a LG BD570 which cost a little more but works perfectly. I am very happy with it and AMAZON for the no hassle return policy.
